Hybrid vs Gas Fuel Cost

The only claim this page makes is arithmetic: at the same mileage and fuel price, a car with better mpg burns less fuel, and the difference times your years of driving is the fuel-money gap. Purchase price, taxes, battery replacement and resale are not included — the tool does not pretend to judge the whole ownership picture.

Fuel cost comparison

  • Gas car, per year$1,400.00
  • Hybrid, per year$875.00
  • Saved with hybrid, per year$525.00
  • Over 3 years$1,575.00
gas: (12,000 miles ÷ 30 mpg) × $3.50 = $1,400.00/yr
hybrid: ÷ 48 mpg = $875.00/yr. Difference × 3 years = $1,575.00. Fuel-only comparison.

Why fuel-only?

Fuel is the easiest part to compute honestly: it is just (distance ÷ mpg) × price for each car. Purchase price differences, incentives, insurance and resale value vary by model, region and time — folding them into a single number would hide the assumptions rather than show them.

If you want your current car's mpg first, measure it with the MPG calculator over a few fill-ups, then bring the number here.
